In today’s economy of rising prices and shrinking paychecks it is uncanny to consider a service that has decreased in price. Non-bulk freight rates in Australia have been steadily declining over the past 50 years. While shipping prices are more expensive than they were 50 years ago, the cost of shipping has gotten cheaper.

Road Rates

Since 1965, the rates shippers have paid to move merchandise in Australia has dropped by almost 50 percent. The major reasons for this drop in freight rates is technological advancement.

Trucks in the early 60s were quite small and stiff requiring numerous runs to get all the freight to its required location. Today trucks are larger, more pliable and more fuel-efficient. As a result more freight can be moved faster with a lower cost to the shipping company.

Roads throughout Australia are also better paved, wider, and better maintained than in the 1960s. As a result freight can be moved faster over these well-structured and multi-laned highways.

Rail Freight

Rail freight shipping has also improved thanks to technology. Rates have fallen nearly 70% in the past 30 years. Tracks, train engines and merchandise containers have all improved contributing to faster delivery and lower prices.

The train track network is more extensive than back in the 60s allowing better access to points around the country. The tracks themselves are stronger and sleeker allowing trains to move faster along their lines.

Train engines are more efficient than the old coal operated machines. Diesel and electricity along with lighter alloys provide for stronger faster train engines.

Container structure has also improved. Lighter and stronger, these containers are easy to pack and easy to stack. The lighter load provides for faster delivery and the stronger containers allows for less merchandise damage.

Dropping Rates

Shipping rates are expected to decrease 0.5 cents per year thanks to improved roads and train tracks as well as train engines, trucks and shipping containers. Keep in mind that this does not mean prices are less expensive than what they were in the 1960s, simply that, relatively speaking, it has gotten cheaper to ship non-bulk items.
